Knee problems are often due to knee injury or due to knee arthritis. In the UK, knee injuries are so common that Knee Arthroscopy is amongst the most common procedures performed in Orthopaedic Surgery. Ligament injuries are increasing in numbers every year due to our passion for pivoting sports and due to skiing. ACL reconstruction is the most common ligament reconstructive procedure performed and its success comes from exacting surgical technique and rehabilitation.

There is quite often an overlap of soft tissue knee injury, articular cartilage damage and knee osteoarthritis. Up to 60% of knee arthroscopies show chondral damage. The management of chondral defects and early knee arthritis is a great challenge. Meniscal repair and articular cartilage repair give the best chance of Knee Joint Preservation. Knee replacements are overtaking hip replacements in numbers being performed and their longevity. There is a trend to unicompartmental knee replacement whenever possible to save the normal part of the knee. Knee replacement designs are also changing to improve knee kinematics, achieve high flexion and improve function.
